GSCO has proudly funded trips for wounded veterans for many years, providing 18 deserving recipients with world-class outdoor adventures thanks to the generosity of our members.  The organization maintains restricted funds dedicated to this program and has recently committed to expanding its efforts by sending even more wounded veterans on these once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

At the January 2026 SCI and GSCO conventions, 15 trips were donated to the program, with most scheduled to take place during 2026 and 2027.  Several of these were donated in their entirety.  At least three trips are already planned for 2026, including two fishing trips and one Texas hunting adventure.

While each trip is unique, the typical arrangement is for GSCO to sponsor one veteran while the outfitter donates a hunt or fishing trip for a second veteran.  When needed, a veteran facilitator accompanies the group, serving as a liaison between the veterans and the outfitter.  GSCO covers transportation, lodging, meals, licenses, gratuities, and other incidental expenses.

Dick Caillouet, a fellow sheep hunter and retired fighter pilot, has dedicated years to supporting wounded veterans.  He works closely with the program to match each veteran with trips that best suit their abilities and interests.

The program’s first trip of 2026 took place in April. Wayne Farnsworth, who has earned Grand Slams with a rifle, muzzleloader, and bow, generously donated a prime-time walleye fishing trip on Lake Erie for three veterans and a facilitator.  Although the forecast called for unsettled weather, and Lake Erie is well known for its rough conditions, the group enjoyed favorable weather on the first day and quickly reached the daily limit. Day two brought more uncertainty, but they headed out anyway and once again limited out.

Wayne’s expertise on Lake Erie, combined with his state-of-the-art electronics and years of experience on the water, helped make the trip a tremendous success.  His generosity of both time and resources gave these veterans an unforgettable experience.
