Species

Greenland Caribou

Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus ssp. greenland

Location

The island of Greenland, north of Kangaamiut. The barrier with introduced reindeer to the south is a large glacier at a latitude of 66o North. The Arctic Circle latitude is 66o 30' North.

Description

Smaller and paler than the Alaska-Yukon subspecies, with long, simple antlers. Male (“bull”) and female (“cow”) caribou can grow antlers annually, although the proportion of females that grow antlers varies greatly between populations. Antlers are typically larger on males. Antler configuration varies by species and subspecies and, together with pelage differences, can often be used to distinguish between species and subspecies.

Habitat

Tundra.

Remarks

Environmental DNA studies show evidence of Caribou in Northern Greenland dating back nearly 10,000 years. The following subspecies were validated in North America, though there has been recent proposed revisions: R. t. caboti, R. t. caribou, R. t. dawsoni, R. t. groenlandicus, R. t. osborni, R. t. pearyi, and R. t. terranovae. However, since 1991, many genetic studies have revealed deep divergence between modern barren ground caribou and woodland caribou. Taxonomists argue that the woodland caribou was incorrectly classified, noting that true woodland caribou, the uniformly dark, small-maned type with the frontally emphasized, flat-beamed antlers, is scattered thinly along the southern rim of North American caribou distribution. More recent studies suggest the splitting of reindeer and caribou into six distinct species over their range. Molecular data showed that the Greenland caribou (R. t. groenlandicus) and the Svalbard reindeer (R. t. platyrhynchus), although not closely related to each other, were the most genetically divergent among Rangifer clades.

The Greenland Caribou (Rex Baker Super 50) is specific to that particular milestone. The CBGC and the Greenland Caribou are the same species, but they’re separated solely for the purpose of the RB Super 50.

If you submitted your Caribou (Greenland) as a CBGC, you would need to hunt a CBGC outside of Greenland in order to have one from each location.
